10/1/2019 5:31:00 PM

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay men's and women's soccer teams play host to arch-rival Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday, Oct. 2, kicking off the second-annual "Battle of the Bays" competition between the two programs.

Mid-week action starts with the men's soccer contest beginning at 12:30 p.m., followed by the women's game scheduled for 3 p.m. Both matches will have live stats available here.

Pioneer men's soccer is coming off two hard-fought overtime losses over the weekend against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foes UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos. Both matches ended in 1-0 results, with the Sept. 29 contest against CSU San Marcos taking two overtime periods to decide.

Freshman goalkeeper Sean O'Brien had a spectacular weekend in the net, tallying a total of 16 saves in the two home matches. O'Brien had several diving stops in the narrow loss to UC San Diego on Sept. 27, and was just as solid in the double-overtime defeat to Cal State San Marcos. The Brea, Calif. native has amassed 24 saves in four contests this season.

Cal Stat East Bay women's soccer has been among the top defensive teams in the nation during this recent streak, going 416 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal before Cal State San Marcos broke through with an improbable score in the 95th minute on Sept. 29. Prior to that point, the Pioneers pitched three-straight shutouts, including playing then No. 1-ranked UC San Diego to a scoreless 0-0 tie on Sept. 27.

Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Smith had another big weekend in the net, recording a total of 13 saves in the two home matches. Smith came up big with eight saves against UC San Diego before finishing with five saves against Cal State San Marcos. A native of Gardnerville, Nev., Smith has started seven of the Pioneers' eight games this season and has amassed 38 saves.

Cal State East Bay captured the inaugural championship in the "Battle of the Bays" between the athletic departments of CSUEB and Cal State Monterey Bay last season in 2018-19. The Pioneers edged the Otters by a final score of 27-25 in the yearlong multi-sport matchup between the two schools.

Conceived prior to the 2018-19 season, the "Battle of the Bays" awards points based on head-to-head results in 13 common sports. Four points are available in each sport, and the amount of points to be won each meeting depends upon the number of games scheduled in each sport. All four points are up for grabs at the CCAA Championship events in cross country, golf, and track.
