GRAND JUNCTION, Colo., -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team improved to 4-0 in their first true road test of the 2018 campaign after defeating Colorado Mesa, 1-0 Friday evening, September 7 at Walker Field.

The four wins match the Pioneers season total from the 2017 season and is the best start for the CSUEB women's soccer program since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

The Pioneers were dominant in the contest as they outshot the host Mavericks 13-4 with five shots coming on goal for Cal State East Bay to just one shot at the box for Colorado Mesa.

Despite being in control of the game from the opening kick the Pioneers would not score their game-winning goal until the 44th minute of action.

Freshman
Kayla Morales (San Jose, Calif.) scored her first goal of the 2018 season as she crossed in from right, headed down and blasted in the shot from 12 yards out. Morales was assisted on the goal by senior
Miranda Gonzalez (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and junior newcomer
Keionna Claypoole (Sacramento, Calif.).

Claypoole is now tied for the team lead with two assists as she also took one shot attempt. Gonzalez notched her first helper of the season and Morales finished the contest with one shot.

Chace Miguel (Hollister, Calif.) all players with three shots with two shots coming on goal.
Savannah Schultz (Folsom, Calif.) and
Jamie McPherson (San Leandro, Calif.) each tallied two shots for the contest with one shot on goal by McPherson.

Eilana Mendoza (Tracy, Calif.),
Lauren McDougal (Elk Grove, Calif.) and
Liz Hernandez (Whittier, Calif.) all chipped in one shot apiece.

Freshman goalkeeper
Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) compiled her third shutout of the season as she finished the match with one save.

Cal State East Bay will play one more match in Grand Junction, Colo., on Sunday afternoon, September 9 against the Western State Mountaineers. Kick off is scheduled for a noon pacific time zone.
