Greer Blanks Coyotes to Highlight Friday Split

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay softball team split its doubleheader with Cal State San Bernardino Friday on a gorgeous afternoon at Pioneer Field to open the final series of the 2018 season.

Abby Greer tossed a four-hit shutout to earn her seventh win in a 5-0 victory in the opener. The Coyotes came back to win a slugfest in a game two, 10-8, as the teams combined for 29 hits.

Greer breezed through seven scoreless innings, walking just one and striking out six in a game that took just under 90 minutes to play. The Pioneers grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first on a walk to Maddie Ramirez, a wild pitch, and an RBI double by Sarah Fukushima.

As it turned out, that would've been enough run support for Greer. But the Pioneers tacked on some insurance runs nonetheless, breaking the game open with four in the bottom of the sixth. Courtney Leyba led things off with a single, Bailee Glover had the big hit of the inning with a two-run double to left-center, and the Pioneers added two more runs on a bunt by Rachel Tadlock, followed by a wild pitch.

The team tallied just six hits in the win, with Leyba leading the way with a 2-for-3 performance.

It was a different story in game two -- CSUEB's offense was up to the task, but the San Bernardino bats broke out in a big way as well. Fukushima brought home Ramirez with an RBI triple as the teams traded runs in the first inning. The Coyotes then hung eight runs on the scoreboard in the second. The visitors tallied eight hits in the frame, although seven of the runs were unearned as the inning was extended due to an infield error.

East Bay refused to roll over, answering back with three runs in the bottom of the second and three more in the third. Jennifer Palmares ripped a two-run double off the centerfield wall, then Ramirez sliced a single down the first base line to bring home another run. Bailee Aguigui kept the momentum going with a single up the middle to make it 9-6, which brought the top of the lineup back up. Palmares then knocked in two more runs with another double, this one into the left-center gap.

The score was 9-7 after three innings, and it appeared the Pioneers might have enough to pull off a comeback. But the home team only scored one run the rest of the way, their rally coming up just short

Taylor Lara was very effective in relief, allowed just one run on three hits in 5.0 innings of work.

Palmares went 3-for-4 in the back end of the twinbill, knocking in a season-high four runs. Leyba, Ramirez, Fukushima, and Jocelyn Baldon finished with two hits apiece.

CSUEB wraps up the regular season with another doubleheader on Saturday against the Coyotes, with first pitch set for 11:00 a.m.
