Pioneers Drop Series Opener on Rainy Saturday

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay softball team battled wet conditions on the first day of its scheduled four-game series with Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday at Pioneer Field, falling 4-0 in the opener. That game was interrupted by a two-hour rain delay, and so the teams only played three innings of the second game of the doubleheader before it was called for darkness.

The Toros (7-11, 5-8 CCAA) grabbed an early lead in game one. After a CSUEB error on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed the top of the first inning to extend, Doreen Corella belted a three-run homer.

Abby Greer was brilliant after that, striking out seven and allowing just three hits in a complete game effort. She took a hard-luck loss, as the only earned run she gave up was the final run the Toros tacked on in the seventh.

East Bay's offense couldn't get any rallies going on either side of the rain delay, as CSUDH's Alyssa Valinches racked up 12 strikeouts in a three-hit shutout.

CSUEB's best chance came n the sixth, when hits by Maddie Ramirez and Sarah Fukushima put runners as the corners with no outs. But Valinches struck out the next two batters, then retired Desiree Jimmy on a ground out to end the threat.

Dominguez Hills jumped out to a quick lead again in the second game, scoring four runs on four hits against Taylor Lara in the top of the first.

The Pioneers finally broke through for a run in the bottom of the second. Sarah Fukushima led off with a walk, moved around to third on a sac bunt followed by a ground out, then scored on Belle Placencia's infield single.

The teams will resume play in game two in the top of the fourth inning on Sunday morning starting at 10:00 a.m. After a short break, the Toros and Pioneers will then play the scheduled doubleheader to close out the four-game series.
