SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., -- After a total of 110 minutes and two overtimes the Cal State East Bay men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Bay Area rival, Academy of Art on Sunday afternoon, September 3 at Boxer Stadium.

With the tie, East Bay moves to 1-0-1 on the 2017 season and are now 1-1-1 in their last three meetings with the Urban Knights.

The game was physical and tightly contested as the Urban Knights scored the game-tying goal just 40 seconds after the Pioneers lit up the scoreboard first. After the game concluded CSUEB and ARTU piled up 42 combined fouls, six total cautions and one ejection.

Senior midfielder
Evan Sanchez, a native of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., scored East Bay's lone goal on a penalty kick in the 31st minute of action. For Sanchez it was his team-leading second goal of the season.

The Urban Knights would respond 40 seconds later to tie the game a 1-1 with a goal from Isiah Quiros.

Although no more goals where scored by the teams, it was not because of offensive effort. ARTU held the shot attempt advantage 14-9 and the shot on goal battle 5-3.

Jonathan Cuevas led all players with a season high six shot attempts, including one shot at the goal. Senior
Ikaika Nichols and sophomore
Shubham Kumar each put up one shot attempt along with Sanchez.

On the defensive side junior goalkeeper
Omar Coronel logged in all 110 minutes of game action and came away with a season best four saves while only allowing one goal.

East Bay will close out its non-conference schedule with three more home meetings against Norte Dame De Namur (Sept. 5), Southern Nazarene (Sept. 8) and Westminster College (Sept. 10) before opening California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play with a home matchup against Humboldt State on Friday, September 15.
