#1 Humboldt State Edges East Bay in Both Ends of Doubleheader

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay Softball team played their makeup California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match against the top ranked Humboldt State Lumberjacks on Monday afternoon at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers suffered a pair of tough losses in the doubleheader, 6-1 in the opening game and 3-1 in the second game that included extra innings.
 
The Pioneers move to 8-10 on the season with a 4-10 mark in the conference play.
 
The first game was a defensive clinic as Humboldt State's Madison Williams (7-1) tossed a no-hitter with seven strikeouts. Not to be outdone Pioneer freshman Abby Greer (4-5) went 6.2 innings while retiring four Lumberjack batters.
 
Both squad recorded multiple errors as the Pioneers committed three errors to two errors by the Lumberjacks. 4
 
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first in the opening inning as Courtney Leyba scored on a wild pitch after getting on base on an error by the Lumberjack third baseman to lead off the bottom of the first inning.
 
Humboldt State would answer with one run the third inning and five runs in the top of the seventh to claim a 6-1 victory.
 
The final game of the doubleheader was similar to the first with a great pitchers duel between East Bay's Olivia McWhorter (2-4) and Humboldt State's Kalyn Paque (7-0) as both pitchers tossed complete games.
 
McWhorter retired a couple Lumberjack batter and walked three while Paque struck out three with no walks.
 
The second game did feature more offense as both teams registered at least five hits.
 
East Bay once again lit up the scoreboard first when senior Marisa Lerma knocked an RBI double to center field scoring Jennifer Palmares in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
Humboldt State answered with a run in the top of the sixth inning to tie he game at 1-1.
 
The teams would carry its 1-1 tie into extra innings, but it would be a two RBI home run by Paque that sealed the deal for the first place Lumberjacks as they swept the doubleheader.
 
Marisa Lerma led the Pioneers with two hits and a RBI, while Jennifer Palmares scored a run with a hit. Ali Cerminara and Ashley Allen each added one hit apiece for CSUEB.
 
East Bay will remain in Hayward this weekend as they welcome the visiting UC San Diego Tritons for a weekend series on Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11 with doubleheaders on both days.
 
Friday's doubleheader will begin at 12:00 noon and Saturday's first pitch will be at 11:00 a.m. All games will be held at Pioneer Softball Field.
