Pioneer Bats Explode in Doubleheader Sweep of Holy Names

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay softball team has a perfect 4-0 record to start the season after sweeping both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against Holy Names (0-3) at Pioneer Field.

Both contests were halted in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the eight-run rule, as the Pioneers notched victories by final scores of 8-0 and 13-5. East Bay hit .400 for the day as a team (22-for-55), and freshman pitcher Abby Greer kept the Hawks at bay with 8.1 scoreless innings. She earned two wins today and has a 3-0 record in the young season.

Greer was dominant in the first game of the day, holding Holy Names without a base runner until the fourth. She struck out eight and still needed just 80 pitches to toss a one-hit shutout.

The Pioneers scored in each of the final four innings, with leadoff hitter Courtney Leyba serving as the catalyst. She and Ashley Allen both singled to lead off the third. Haley Keahi roped a double to left to plate the game's first run, than Ali Cerminara made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.

CSUEB loaded the bases the following inning thanks to a pair of HNU errors, then Leyba unloaded them by ripping a three-run double into the right-center gap.

The Pioneers hung yet another crooked number on the board in the fifth when freshman Sarah Fukushima followed a walk to Marisa Lerma with her first career home run, a two-run blast to left field, to make it 7-0.

The home team headed into the sixth needing just one run to end the game. Allen led off with a single, then Leyba shot an opposite field double down the third base line. After a walk to Emilie Portesi, Keahi lined one to the wall in right-center for the walk-off hit.

Leyba finished 3-for-3 with three RBI. The sophomore was ridiculously hot in the season's opening week, going 8-for-11 with three doubles, a home run, six RBI, five runs, and two stolen bases.

The Hawks barely threatened offensively in the front end of the doubleheader, but it was a different story in game two. Holy Names took a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a defensive miscue by the Pioneers. Then in the second inning, the Hawks strung three straight hits together against freshman Olivia McWhorter to make the score 4-0.

The Pioneers didn't waste much time in answering back, however. They sent 10 batters to the plate in bottom of the third, and when the dust settled, their 4-0 deficit had turned into a 7-4 lead. Keahi knocked in the first run with a ground out, Lerma was hit by a pitch for an RBI, and Tanya Galvan snuck a bases-loaded single through the left side for the third run. Then Fukushima capped off a monster inning for the team and a memorable day for herself by crushing a grand slam over the center field fence.

Bailee Glover came out of the bullpen in relief of McWhorter and gave up just one unearned run in 1.2 innings of work. Greer made her second appearance of the day with two outs in the fourth and allowed just one hit over the final 2.1 innings.

The Pioneers batted around for the second time in the game in the bottom of the fifth, tallying four hits, two walks, and two HNU errors. Cerminara started things off with a solo homer, her second of the season. Jennifer Palmares capped off the five-run inning with a two-run double into left-center.

Once again East Bay entered the bottom of the sixth needing just one run to seal the win, and once again they took care of business. Cerminara, Lerma, and Galvan all singled to load the bases, then Palmares lined another ball into the left-center gap to easily plate the winning run.

Palmares drove in three runs in game two, and she and Galvan both posted three-hit performances. Allen, Cerminara, and Lerma also notched two hits in the victory.

Next up, the Pioneers are back in action Tuesday afternoon to kick off Homecoming week with a doubleheader vs. Dominican at 12 p.m.
