HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay water polo team takes a short trip down the 880 freeway on Saturday morning for a doubleheader hosted by Santa Clara University at Sullivan Aquatic Center.Â
The Pioneers will take on the Division I Broncos in the first match of the day at 9:30 a.m. They'll hang around for an afternoon showdown with Fresno Pacific (0-1) at 3 p.m.
PIONEER POINTS
CSUEB is coming off a frustrating 16-6 loss to No. 22 Cal State Northridge last Sunday in their home opener. The Matadors jumped out a big lead before halftime and the Pioneers scored just one goal in each of the first three quarters.Â
Newcomer
Leilani Vazquez saw her first action of the season and netted two of East Bay's six goals in her debut.Â
Freshman
Auriel Bill scored two goals as well, and she's the only Pioneer with multiple goals in both games so far. Heading into the weekend, Bill leads the team in points (6) and steals (3).
Goalkeeper
Nikki Vaughan has racked up 22 saves in just six quarters of play, saving 56.4 percent of shot attempts against her.Â
ABOUT SANTA CLARA
The Broncos have opened the season with a narrow 11-9 win over Cal State Monterey Bay and a 16-6 loss to No. 8 Hawaii. Hannah Buck leads the team with six goals and three assists so far. The Pioneers and SCU met twice last season. The Broncos won 14-10 at Pioneer Pool on Feb. 6, then the Pioneers got revenge with a 7-4 victory the following week at the Triton Invitational.Â
ABOUT FRESNO PACIFIC
This will be the second meeting of the season between the Pioneers and Sunbirds, who will join CSUEB in the Western Water Polo Association in 2018. East Bay earned a 12-9 victory down in Fresno on Jan. 21, led by
