THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay head water polo coach
Lisa Cooper notched her 250th career victory on Saturday as the Pioneers swept their doubleheader at Cal Lutheran's Tina Finali Invitational. CSUEB has now won four straight games after topping St. Francis College,14-7, and Siena, 12-6, today.
East Bay (7-5) jumped out to an early lead with three straight goals in the first six minutes, as
Cheyenne Pena,
Alicia Tully, and
Rocio Fesembeck all scored.
Nikki Vaughan made two saves, then turned goalkeeping duties over to MaKenna Nation for the rest of the game. The sophomore tallied six saves and a steal in the win.
St. Francis scored twice to make it 3-2 after the first quarter, but the Pioneers really started to pull away in the second. They got five goals from five different players in the frame to take an 8-4 advantage into halftime.
Brandi Carroll scored the team's only goal on the third period, but they tallied five more in the final quarter to secure a one-sided win.
Former goalkeeper
Miranda Diehm scored her first career goal as a field player, while Tully notched a hat trick with her third goal of the afternoon.
For the game, the Pioneers were just 1-for-7 on power play opportunities, but they did convert four penalty shots, including two in the final period. 10 different players score for CSUEB in a great team effort.
The squad was back in the pool just a few hours later to do battle with Siena, and saw the back end of the twinbill follow a somewhat similar script. The teams played to a 3-3 tie after the first quarter, but the East Bay defense locked down after that.
Vaughan held Sienna scoreless in the second period, as
Olivia Mackell and
Brooke Hodgkinson both found the back of the net to make it 5-3 at halftime. Vaughan then limited the Saints to just one goal in the third, while the Pioneers tacked four more scores on the board to start to pull away.
Sienna scored a pair of late goals after they were trailing 11-4, but it didn't make a difference in the final result. Vaughan played the whole game this time and posted 11 saves in the win.
Tully notched her second hat trick of the day with three more goals. Hodgkinson and
Leilani Vazquez matched her, each totaling three goals in the evening contest.
The victory over Siena gave Cooper her 251st win, putting her already on the road to 300. Now in her 15th season with the Pioneers, Cooper has led the program to the Western Water Polo Association championships games each of the last three seasons.
The Pioneers will look to make it a perfect weekend when they wrap up Cal Lutheran's tournament with two more games on Sunday morning. They're set to take on Occidental at 8:00 a.m., followed by Chapman at 11:30 a.m.
