Pioneers Sweep Sunday Twinbill at SF State

SAN FRANCISCO. – The Cal State East Bay softball team improved to 6-2, including 2-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with their Sunday doubleheader sweep of San Francisco State at SFSU Softball Field

The Pioneers claimed one-run victories by final scores of 2-1 and 5-4 to split the weekend series at two games apiece. East Bay batted .285 for the day as a team (16-for-56) and Bailee Glover picked up her first win of the season and the Pioneers first CCAA win of 2017 by tossing a complete game.

Glover was dominant in the first game of the day, holding SF State without a run scored until the final inning of action.

East Bay scored runs in back-to-back innings on an Emilie Portesi RBI sacrifice fly to left field that brought home Ashley Allen in the third inning. In the fourth inning Allen pushed an RBI single to left field scoring Tanya Galvan. Sarah Fukushima led the Pioneer with three hits while Ali Ceminara and Ashley Allen each tallied two hits apiece.

The final game of the afternoon featured much more offense as Lerma put East Bay on the board first with a three-run homer to left field, scoring Cerminara and Jennifer Palmares in the forth inning.

Lerma finished the contest with three hits, four RBIs and one run scored. She also brought in the Easy Bay go ahead run with a RBI single to right center scoring Palmares. Palmares compiled two hits and scored two runs in the Pioneer victory.

Galvan would give the Pioneers a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning with a RBI single through the right side bringing home Anissa Maldonado. The Gators would respond with four runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning before the aforementioned game winning score by Lerma and Palmares.

Freshman pitcher Olivia McWhorter recorded her second win of the season but not allowing any runs or hits through one inning tossed. Glover racked up her first save of 2017 after pitching the final inning of play and not giving up any hit nor runs. Freshman Abby Greer led the Pioneers with one strikeout through five innings of action.

Next up, the Pioneers will host the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks for a weekend series with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. The first pitch for Friday is scheduled for 12:00 noon and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. All game will be played at Pioneer Softball Field.
