Pioneers and Golden Eagles Play to 1-1 Draw

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Pioneer men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against visiting California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent Cal State L.A. on Sunday morning, October 8 in Pioneer Stadium.

The Pioneers (2-9-2, 0-7-1 CCAA) snapped their eight game losing streak after holding off a furious second half flurry by the Golden Eagles (9-1-2, 3-1-2 CCAA). Cal State L.A. was able to turn their 22 shots and nine corner kicks into the game tying goal within the final 10 minutes of play.

David Elizaga put in the Golden Egales only goal of the afternoon of assists from Julian Zamora and Miguel Gavan Lara.

It was a tale of two halves as East Bay seized controlled of the game from the opening kick. The Pioneers routinely applied pressure to the Cal State L.A. defense attacking from every possible angle. But in the second half it would be the Golden Eagles dominating offense limiting the Pioneers offensive momentum

Freshman Grant LaFleur (Brentwood, Calif.,) scored his first goal as a Pioneer late in the first half to help CSUEB take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

LaFleur received the pass from Alec Hester through traffic from outside the box and placed a perfect shot into the bottom left corner of the of the goal just past the CSULA goal keeper. For Hester it was his first assist of the 2017 season.

Grant LaFleur, Jared Johnson and TJ butler each tallied two shots each for the Pioneers. Jonathan Cuevas, Keith Moreno and Evan Sanchez added one shot for East Bay.

Pioneer goal keeper Carlos Moreno recorded a career best 13 saves. Moreno now has a team-high 46 saves on the season, good for second in the CCAA.

East Bay will have the week off before returning home for a Sunday afternoon matchup with UC Santa Cruz on October 15. The game will begin at 5:00 p.m. in Pioneer Stadium.
