HAYWARD, Calif. --The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team gave a strong effort in the penultimate game of the regular season on Thursday, but fell at home by a final score of 4-1 to UC San Diego, the No. 18 ranked team in the nation.
The Pioneers fall to 3-12-2 for the season and will look to snag their first conference victory of the season in Saturday's finale against Cal State San Marcos. The Tritons improve to 10-1-4 with a 7-1-2 conference record, as they remain in a tight race near the top of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.
East Bay played an excellent first half against an extremely athletic UCSD squad, controlling possession and keeping the Tritons off the scoreboard for nearly 40 minutes.
In fact, the Pioneers held the lead for much of the first half after
TJ Butler netted the game's first goal in the 16th minute.
Tin Nguyen sent a pass up the middle to Butler, who dribbled past a couple defenders and took a shot from outside the goalie box. UCSD's keeper saved it, but the rebound came right back to Butler, and this time he booted it in for the goal.
Eats Bay was just a few minutes away from taking that 1-0 lead into halftime when the Tritons struck twice. Jonathan Sabouri scored the first of his three goals in the 40th minute to tie the score, then Uly De la Cal gave theTritons a lead just 52 seconds before the break.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Sabouri put the visitors up 3-1. Six minute later, he secured the hat trick and essentially put the game out of reach. Eats Bay was stout on defense for long stretches at the beginning and end of the contest, but the Tritons netted all four of their goals in a 13-minute stretch right before and after halftime.
UCSD out-shot the Pioneers 14-7 overall. Butler and junior
Ben Reiter led the way for East Bay with a pair of shots each.
The Pioneers wrap up the 2017 season Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. against Cal State San Marcos. Prior to the game, CSUEB will honor seniors
Davis Okonkwo,
Ikaika Nichols,
Evan Sanchez,
Adolfo Villa,
Christian Mendoza, and Butler in the annual "Senior Day" ceremony.
