McDougal, Fernandez Score in East Bay's 2-0 Shutout of Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., -- The Pioneer women's soccer team returned to their winning ways with a 2-0 road victory over the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs on Friday afternoon, October 13 at the Soccer Complex.
 
Cal State East Bay improves to 4-10 on the year after picking up their third non-conference win of the 2017 season.
 
The Pioneers came out the gates aggressive in the first half attempting nine shots to just two from the Banana Slugs. The two teams would enter the intermission knotted at 0-0. East Bay would continue their offensive intensity in the second half compiling 10 shots and connecting on goals in the 49th and 67th minutes of play.
 
The first goal of the game was put in by freshman Lauren McDougal (Elk Grove, Calif.,) who scored her second goal of the year on a shot from 20 yards out that landed in the left corner of the goal. She was assisted on the score by Bri Vallente. For Vallente it was her first assist of the season.
 
On the Pioneers second point of the afternoon, junior Aulani Fernandez (Brentwood, Calif.,) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season on the tap off the right post. She was assisted on her goal by Kiret Pattar and Janelle Herrera, both Pioneers have two assists on the season.
 
Cal State East Bay held the shot advantage 19-6 and recorded five corner kicks to none from UC Santa Cruz.
 
Jamie McPherson led the Pioneers with four shot attempts, Carsyn Hoogendoorn tallied three shots, Lauren McDougal, Savannah Schultz and Aulani Fernandez all put up two shots and Bri Vallente, Abby Buitrago, Miranda Gonzalez, Janelle Herrera, Michelle Silva and Erika Cid Del Prado all compiled one attempt apiece.
 
Sophomore Cheyanne Foster (Rocklin, Calif.,) recorded her first shutout of the 2017 season tying a season-best with three saves.
 
Cal State East Bay will be off for a week before continuing their road trip with matches against Chico State (Oct. 20) and Stanislaus State (Oct. 22) to conclude their 2017 road schedule.
