HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team earned its second straight shutout victory to open the 2016 season with a 1-0 win over Holy Names on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Stadium.
The Pioneers improve to 2-0-0 in the regular season under first year head coach
Michael Bielski.
East Bay was extremely successful in controlling possession on the ball throughout the contest. HNU tried to play a physical game to disrupt CSUEB's rhythm, but the Pioneers' ball movement was effective.
Much of the game was played in the corners and the middle of the field, as the teams combined for just 11 total shots.
The Pioneers put just one shot on goal the entire game, but they made it count. With less than five minutes to go before halftime.
Jared Johnson played the ball out of the right corner of the offensive zone back to
Chris Arce. Arce sent a cross towards the left side of the goal, and
Michael Paiva finished it to put East Bay on the scoreboard.
It was the second goal in as many games for Paiva, who was CSUEB's leading scorer and an All-CCAA honorable mention selection last year as a sophomore.
Goalkeeper
Ariel Rosenmann needed to make just three saves to record the shutout, thanks to stout play by East Bay's back line defense.
Next up, the Pioneers continue their five-game homestand to begin the season when they host No. 23 ranked Upper Iowa on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
