HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team escaped with a dramatic overtime victory over Dominican on Tuesday night after
Michael Paiva found the back of the net for the game's only goal 7:16 into the extra period.
The Pioneers complete their non-conference homestand to start the season with a record of 3-2, and will now hit the road to open the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule.
East Bay was aggressive from the outset on its home field, creating scoring chances early and often. The best opportunity of the first half came in the 26th minute when Paiva lofted a pass to
Steffen Sauer over the defense just in front of the net. Sauer chipped it into the goal, but the Pioneers were whistled for being offside.
15 minutes into the second half, CSUEB got two scoring opportunities in front of the goal off a corner kick. The first shot attempt hit the post, then the rebound found Sauer, who hit the crossbar before the Penguins could clear it.
With 12 minutes left in regulation,
Evan Sanchez fired a shot from 25 yards after another corner kick, but Dominican's keeper made a leaping save to protect the scoreless tie. The teams headed to overtime with Dominican narrowly out-shooting the Pioneers 10-9.
East Bay finally broke through just over seven minutes into OT, as Sanchez sent a through ball from the left side of the field up to Paiva, who gathered it in the middle of the box and beat the keeper into the top left corner of the net for his team-leading third goal of the season.
The Pioneers erupted in celebration as they snapped a two-game losing streak. This marks the first overtime victory for Cal State East Bay since Sept. 13 two years ago when they won at Western Washington. Since then, the program had been 0-5-4 in nine overtime contests.
CSUEB goalkeeper
Ariel Rosenmann finished with three saves and improves his record to 3-1 as a starter after recording his third shutout of the year.
