HAYWARD
, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay got the 2016 WWPA Championships off to a terrific start with a dominant 16-8 victory over Gannon University Friday at Chabot College. The win gives the #3 seed Pioneers a date with #2 seed Sonoma State Saturday in the semifinals.

East Bay jumped on the #6 seed Gannon Golden Knights early on. The Pioneers got in front 5-0 before Gannon could net their first goal. The Pioneers would add two more in the first and have a big 7-1 lead after one.

Tori Dettloff, Taylor Cross, and Sabrina Hatzer each had two goals in the first. Olivia Mackell added the seventh and final goal with seven seconds left in the first quarter.

The scoring slowed in the second quarter for East Bay scoring, with Brooke Hodgkinson getting a goal with 4:20 remaining. The Pioneers would go to the half with an 8-2 lead.

The Pioneers would put a stamp on their win in the third with another six goals. Six different Pioneers scored goals in the third, as Kallie McHugh, Brandi Carroll, and Nicole Williams all got themselves in the score sheet.

With the victory well in hand, East Bay tacked on two insurance goals as Cheyenne Brady and Hodgkinson found the back of the cage.

Hodgkinson and Hatzer each scored three goals. It was the first career hat trick as a Pioneer for the freshman Hodgkinson. Hatzer celebrated her WWPA first-team nod with a hat trick of her own.

All-WWPA honorees Cross and Dettloff both had two goals. Mackell also netted a pair of goals and led the team with three drawn ejections.

Rosio Fesembeck paced the Pioneers with three assists and drew two ejections. All-WWPA honoree Casey Rushforth and fellow senior Nayiri Kechichian nitched two assists apiece.

Starting goalkeeper Nikki Vaughan, who was also an All-WWPA selection, was impressive in the net. She allowed two goals and making six saves before WWPA All-Freshman pick Makenna Nation replaced her for the second half. Miranda Diehm also saw time in the cage for the Pioneers, playing the final 4:08 and mnaking one save

When East Bay and Sonoma State meet in Saturday's second semifinal, it will be the third meeting of the season between the two teams. The Pioneers won 11-7 at Sonoma State on Feb. 19 and were defeated by the Seawolves 10-9 on April 9. It will be a rematch of last year's WWPA semifinals, which CSUEB  won in sudden death overtime on a goal by Jenn Lightbody.

The match between East Bay and Sonoma State begins Saturday at 1:45 P.M. at Chabot College.
