HAYWARD, Calif. -- The seedings and match-ups have been announced for the 2016 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships, to be held this weekend at Chabot College.

The host Pioneers enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed after posting an overall record of 14-10 for the season with a mark of 1-2 in designated conference games against Sonoma State, Cal State Monterey Bay, and No. 11 UC San Diego.

East Bay will play its first-round game this Friday, Apr. 29 at 1:45 p.m. against sixth-seeded Gannon University, which enters the postseason with a record of 6-12. The Pioneers recorded an 18-7 victory in the only meeting of the season between the two teams back on Mar. 19 in Indiana.

If the Pioneers can advance, second-seeded Sonoma State awaits them in the second round. The Seawolves (12-13) and Pioneers split two games this year, with CSUEB winning 11-7 in Rohnert Park on Feb. 19, and Sonoma State emerging victorious Apr. 9 at Pioneer Pool by a score of 10-9.

East Bay and Sonoma met in last year's WWPA semifinal round, which the Pioneers won 8-7 in the sudden death overtime period on a goal by Jenn Lightbody. And now once again, CSUEB will need to get past Sonoma State if the team wants to earn its third straight trip to the WWPA title game. Below is this weekend's full schedule of games.
