BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Cal State East Bay water polo team split a pair of games on Saturday at Indiana University's "Fluid Five" tournament, falling to the No. 16 Hoosiers by a score of 13-6 in the morning, before routing WWPA rival Gannon 18-7 in the afternoon.
The Pioneers turned in a solid performance in defeat against Indiana. They scored the first two goals of the game, as
Taylor Cross and
Rocio Fesembeck both found the back of the cage in the first three minutes. After the first quarter, the squads were tied 2-2.
The Hoosiers out-scored East Bay 4-1 in each of the next two periods to pull away, but the Pioneers never let it become one-sided. Cross and Fesembeck each scored again, and Cross also notched two assists in the game.
Goalkeeper Nikkie Vaughan racked up 10 saves despite the loss, and
Sabrina Hatzer and
Tori Dettloff each finished with three steals to lead the team.
The Pioneers had several hours to rest before getting back in the pool against Gannon in the evening. But they showed no signs of fatigue in a one-sided victory.
CSUEB jumped out to an early lead and cruised in the second half. The team's 18 goals is a season high. Cross tallied a hat trick with three goals and four steals to lead. Hatzer,
Casey Rushforth,

Clark, Rushforth, and
Nicole Williams all posted three assists to pace the Pioneers, while Mackell led the way with three drawn exclusions.
Makenna Nation got the start in goal and recorded four saves over the first two quarters.
