HAYWARD, Calif.-- On a stormy day at Pioneer Pool, Cal State East Bay got four goals from senior
Taylor Cross and the Pioneers defeated Azusa Pacific 10-7 in their first match of the day Thursday. In their second game against #18 Hartwick, East Bay jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period but couldn't sustain the early lead and lost 16-11 to the Hawks. Cross added another three goals in the loss to Hartwick. With the split, the Pioneers record stands at 10-7.
CAL STATE EAST BAY 10, AZUSA PACIFIC 7:It was a back-and-forth affair to start between the Pioneers and Cougars that saw the Cougars lead 3-2 with 2:20 left in first period. The Pioneers would tie it when senior
Tori Dettloff put one in the back of the net to make it 3-3. East Bay would reel-off the next three goals to take a 6-3 lead in the second period before Azusa's Britt Harris would score to cap the first half at 6-4 Pioneers.
The Cougars got to within one goal of the Pioneers three different times in the second half at 6-5, 7-6, and 8-7. But every time they did the Pioneers would score to open a two-goal lead.
Cross would net her third goal of the day at 6:47 of the third to make it 7-5. Cross would add her fourth goal with 26 seconds left in the third to make it 8-6.
Senior
Sabrina Hatzer scored at 3:25 of the fourth to make it 9-7 and junior
Brandi Carroll would finish off the Cougars with a goal to make it 10-7 and the Pioneers notched their 10
th win of the season.
In addition to Cross's four goals, Hatzer and senior
Simonne Call each netted two in the first game. Hatzer also dished-out two assists and had three steals. Dettloff matched Hatzer with three steals of her own.
Nikki Vaughan started in goal for the Pioneers and got 16 saves.
HARTWICK 16, CAL STATE EAST BAY 11:Carrol broke a 3-3 tie in the first period with a goal at 1:04 to send the Pioneers to the second period with a 4-3 advantage, but the Hawks would score the next three unanswered to take a 6-4 lead in the second and hold that advantage heading to the intermission.
Dettloff netted a goal to start the third and the Pioneers were down by one, 6-5. The Cougars would once again go on a 3-0 run to open a 9-5 lead and never looked back.
They held no less than a four-goal advantage the rest of the way and left Hayward 16-11 winners.
Cross's three goals in the contest brought her to seven for the pair of games and ran her season total to 29 to lead the team. Carroll had three goals in the second game and four for the day. Carrol upped her goal total in 2016 to 11.
Hatzer had another three steal game and totaled six for the day. Junior
Olivia Mackell led the Pioneers in assists with three in the second game.
Vaughan started in goal again for the Pioneers and secured 13 saves.Â
Cal State East Bay next competes in Bloomington, Ind. at the Indiana Fluid Five Tournament Saturday, March 19 starting with host Indiana University.Â
