East Bay Late Surge Not Enough in Season Closer

SEASIDE, Calif – The Cal State East Bay Pioneer men's soccer team fell to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cal State Monterey Bay 4-3 in heartbreaking fashion to conclude the 2016 regular season on Saturday afternoon.
 
CSUEB will complete the 2016 season with a 2-8-2 CCAA conference record and a 6-10-2 record overall.
 
Junior Michael Pavia put the Pioneers on the board first when he put in his team leading fifth goal of the season. Pavia gathered a lose ball in box and put the shot in the bottom corner of the net.
 
The Otters regrouped to score the next four goals to claim a 4-1 lead early in the second half.
 
East Bay would make a late surge with a goal by sophomore Kalle Sjogrell in the 71st minute of action. It was his first goal of the season.
 
Minutes later senior Kalvin Conley would score his third goal of the year in the 76th minute.
 
Time was not in the Pioneers favor as their second half push would fall short.
 
The teams broke even both attempting 19 shots during the game. East Bay finished with a 12-10 shot on goal advantage.
 
Michael Pavia led the Pioneer charge with four shots, including three shots on goal. Senior Victor Calderon, Kalle Sjorgrell and Christian Gonzalez each added three shots. Sjogrell finsished with two shots on goal and Calderon and Gonzalez finished with one shot on goal each.
 
Kalvin Conley completed the games with two shots with both shots coming on goal. Zach Leon and Chris Arce each put up one shot for CSUEB.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Carlos Moreno finished with a team best six saves on the afternoon.
