FRESNO, Calif--Two overtime goals by
Jenn Lightbody and
Simonne Call completed a comeback for the Pioneers in an 11-9 win over Fresno Pacific Saturday. The victory gives the Pioneers a 2-1 record on the season. This was the season opener for the Sunbirds and they are now 0-1.
Down 1-0 in the first quarter,
Tori Dettloff got the Pioneers on the board with a goal.
Taylor Cross followed her up with two of her own and the Pioneers ended the quarter up 3-2.The Pioneers got goals from Call and
Rocio Fesembeck in the second, but the Sunbirds got five of their own to lead 7-5.
The third and fourth quarter saw the Pioneers defense tighten up after the rough second quarter as they allowed two goals and scored four to force overtime in Fresno.
Detloff was the offense in the third quarter as she added goals two and three on the day to bring the Pioneers to within one at 8-7.
Things were starting to look bleak when the Sunbirds scored first in the final quarter to make it 9-7, but the Pioneers wouldn't go away. They fought back to tie the game just in the nick of time. With 1:04 left,
Nayiri Kechichian netted one to bring the Pioneers to within one. The ninth goal came with just five seconds left by Call and sent the Pioneers surging into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Pioneers again waited until the final two minutes of the period to score when Lightbody put Cal State East Bay ahead 10-9 with 1:41 left in the first overtime. The Pioneers padded their lead in the second overtime when Call scored her third of the game to send Cal State East Bay back to Hayward with a two goal win.
"We had a slow start today. Defensively, we didn't start clicking until the third quarter," said Cal State East Bay Head Coach
Lisa Cooper. "We were able to hold Fresno to two goals in the second half and our communication on offense got better as the game progressed.
Simonne Call had a beautiful goal with five seconds left in the game to get us into overtime and we carried that momentum into overtime."
Call and Dettloff each had three goals to lead the way for the Pioneers. Cross had two and ran her season total to eight. The two goals also moves Cross into 10th place on the career goals list at Cal State East Bay with 96. She needs two more goals to tie Laura Demeneces for ninth.
Lightbody, Kechichian, and Fesembeck each had one goal.
Sabrina Hatzer had four assists to lead the Pioneers in that category. Lightbody and Dettloff each had three steals to pace Cal State East Bay.
Nikki Vaughn started in goal for the Pioneers and had nine saves.
Cal State East Bay will return home for the alumni game Jan. 30 at 12:00 P.M.
The next regular season contest takes place Feb. 6 at Pioneer Pool against Santa Clara. Game time is set for 1:00 P.M.
