Men's Soccer Falls in the Heat to SF State

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team lost at home on Sunday to San Francisco State by a final score of 3-1.

Temperatures climbed into the 90s on the artificial turf at Pioneer Stadium, but that didn't slow down the offenses as the teams combined for 13 shots on goal.

"We have the tools to win, but we need to put together a complete 90-minute match to make that happen," said head coach Andy Cumbo after CSUEB dropped its fifth straight.

The Pioneers struck first, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. Chris Gaitan fed the ball from the right side into Christian Gonzalez. His pass was deflected by a Gator defender right to Victor Calderon just inside the box on the left side. Calderon spin to his right and fired a line drive shot into the top right corner of the net for his first career goal.

East Bay's lead was short-lived, however. Four minutes later, Armando Flores dribbled up the right side and centered the ball right in front of the goal for Robert Kelly, who scored from point blank range to even the score.

The teams went into halftime tied 1-1. Coming out of the break, the Pioneers created several chances, led by strong play from their forwards. But they weren't able to take the lead.

13 minutes into the second half, the Gators grabbed the momentum instead. Flores was well-guarded on the end line near the goal, but he managed to take a shot that deflected off Pioneer goalkeeper Adrian Topete before deflecting off the inside of the left post into the goal.

In the 78th minute, SF State put the game out of reach as James Aguirre headed in a free kick taken from about 35 yards out.

Once again, the Pioneers out-shot their opponents (18-10), but once again they came up short in the final score. Calderon led the way, putting three shots on net. Topete finished with two saves for East Bay.

"We had some really good moments, and we're definitely making improvements in some areas," Cumbo noted. "Kalle Sjogrell and Jeremy Romero were really effective today; Calderon had a great goal; and Gaitan continues to build momentum."

Next up, the Pioneers (1-5, 0-2 CCAA) hit the road for the first time this season. Their Southern California trip includes games at UC San Diego on Friday, Sept. 25 and Cal State San Marcos in Sunday, Sept. 27.
