HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team lost at home in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday evening as 23rd-ranked Seattle Pacific secured a 3-2 double overtime victory in Pioneer Stadium.
Head coach
Amy Gerace remains at 99 career wins after SPU's Laura Miller netted her second goal of the game with just 1:33 remaining in the second overtime to lift the visiting Falcons (4-0-0).
"We made a commitment to atick with the process that it takes to be ready to compete in the CCAA, and today was another game in which we made big strides," said Gerace.
The Pioneers struck first less than seven minutes into the match, giving Seattle Pacific its first deficit of the season.
Corryn Barney headed
Janelle Herrera's corner kick back towards the right corner of the goal, and
Sara Silva headed the ball in for her first goal of the season.
Unfortunately, East Bay's lead was short-lived as the Falcons scored twice in the next 20 minutes to grab a 2-1 lead. The score remained the same into the second half as the Pioneers battled hard to score the equalizer.
Their opportunity finally came in the 87th minute when
Janis Gamboa collided with SPU's keeper in the air going for a ball and drew a foul in the box.
Megan Ravenscroft then converted the penalty kick for her second goal of the season to even the score 2-2 and force overtime.
The first 18 and a half minutes of overtime were scoreless as CSUEB held off several Falcon chances. They nearly pulled off a tie with nationally-ranked SPU, but then Moore found the upper left corner of the net from 20 yards out for the golden goal.
"SPU is a very dynamic team, and we stepped up our intensity in the second half to create opportunities for ourselves," Gerace added. "Our intensity level and work rate is something we've talked a lot about, and we finally made a better team effort in that area tonight. These players are fun to coach, and I'm excited to see the progress this team will continue to make this season."
For the game, Seattle Pacific out-shot the Pioneers 15-to-7, and East Bay got four saves from goalkeeper
Amanda Valentine.
Next up, East Bay (1-4-0) concludes its non-conference schedule by hosting Academy of Art on Tuesday, Sept. 15 under the lights at 7 p.m.
