HAWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team lost in heartbreaking fashion for the second straight game on Thursday evening when Western Washington's Greyden Saunders scored a golden goal in the second overtime period to break a scoreless tie at Pioneer Stadium.
Just as they had last Saturday against Academy of Art, the Pioneers (1-2-0) dominated possession of the ball through the first 90 minutes of play. The home team created chance after chance, racking up 18 shots but only putting four of them on goal.
Marco Neves and
Michael Tieku led a consistant attack with two shots on goal a piece, but neither could find the back of the net.Â
East Bay held the Vikings (2-0-1) to just eight shots, but WWU made them count. CSUEB goalkeeper
Adrian Topete made five saves before allowing the game-winners with less than seven minutes to play in overtime.Â
Saunders took a long cross and fired a shot from just inside the box on the side side. Topete deflected it with his hands, but the ball trickled past him into the right corner of the goal.Â
"That's a goal Adrian will never give up again, and overall he had a good game," said head coach
Andy Cumbo. "I think we have one of the best goalkeepers around, and I believe my team can compete with anyone on our schedule."
"We put in a strong performance and created enough chances to score tonight," he added. "We'll regroup and be ready for Seattle Pacific. They're ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 5 in the nation, so that's a great opportunity."
The Pioneers host SPU at 7 p.m. on Saturday Sept. 12 following the women's game.
