SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. –
Rose Marston,
Marisa Lerma,
Alex Vela,
Jaynie MacDonald, and
Gabby Gonzalez each homered during Friday's conference road doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino. The first three came in a 7-1 series opening while the other pair was not enough in a 12-8 defeat.
Cal State East Bay 7, Cal State San Bernardino 1 – F (Game 1)Lerma's first home run since opening day 2015 gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead and the visiting team never looked back. Four straight batters reached base safely in the fifth starting with a one out single from
Lauren Vestal.
Following a walk and Gonzalez RBI-single, Marston came through with a 3-run homer over the wall in left field. It chased CSUSB starting pitcher Cassandra Williams from the game who allowed six runs in 4.1 innings despite recording seven strikeouts.
Vela bashed her second homer on the year and first since the team's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener back on Feb. 13. The Pioneers scored in three straight frames and the team's third round tripper of the game provided the 7-1 final score.
Pitcher
Sierra Clark picked up the win allowing only one run on six hits while striking out four. Alyssa Ramos was the only hitter to find major success against Clark going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. She gave the host Coyotes an early 1-0 lead after scoring on a Victoria Lievanos third inning single.
Ali Cerminara and Clark led the Pioneer bats with two hits apiece in the victory. At the end of Friday's games the pair lead the team in batting average hitting .386 and .350, respectively.
Cal State San Bernardino 12, Cal State East Bay 8 – F (Game 2)Jaynie MacDonald's second inning homer gave Cal State East Bay a 3-0 lead and in position to sweep Friday's doubleheader. However the Coyotes bats came alive with six runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth.
Mary Menicucci would play the biggest offensive role in her team's game two victory going 3-for-4 with five RBI. She capped off the third inning rally with a two run single, concluded a fourth inning rally with a two run double, and for good measure added an RBI single in the sixth.
The Pioneers did not go down without a fight. After surrendering six runs in the bottom of the third, Cal State East Bay responded with four in the top of the fourth to retake the lead, 7-6.
MacDonald drove in the first four Pioneer runs of the game following an RBI single driving in
Eliana Mello. A two out single from Lerma and a wild pitch brought East Bay within one before Cerminara put the Pioneers out front with a two run double.
It was a short lived lead as the CCAA's leading hitter for average Nicole Nobbe led off the ensuing half inning with a solo homer. It was the start of a five run fourth which essentially put the game out of reach.
CSUEB starting pitcher
Tatiana Beilstein went three innings and allowed seven runs (four earned) on eight base hits. Clark was tagged with the loss after giving up the final five runs of the game.
CSUSB's Jamie Nelson improved to 7-7 despite giving up eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits. Williams picked up the save recording the final five outs, all coming courtesy of strikeouts.
The 1-2-3 hitters of MacDonald, Gonzalez, and Lerma combined to go 6-for-12 with five RBI. Mello tied for the team-high with the first two hits of her collegiate career.
Cal State East Bay (21-16, 9-13 CCAA) will close out the series with Cal State San Bernardino (18-18, 10-11 CCAA) on Saturday, April 4. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
