Cal State East Bay is hoping third time's the charm when facing Cal State Monterey Bay in its tournament opener. The Pioneers fell 9-8 in Hayward on Jan. 24, and 8-5 in Seaside back on March 28.

CSUEB led 6-4 at halftime in its official home debut against the Otters. CSUMB tied the game by the end of the third quarter and scored four unanswered goals to take an 8-6 lead and hold on for the win.

At the Otter Tank host Monterey Bay led 6-2 through three quarters and never trailed. The Pioneers converted only 1-of-8 player advantage chances in that game and are 2-for-12 against the Otters in two games this season.

No. 2 Sonoma State and No. 5 Gannon will play in the other Friday contest at 11 a.m. The winners of both Friday contests will advance to the first of two semifinals on Saturday, April 25. The losing squads from Friday's games will battle in an elimination game at 8 a.m., with the winner advancing to face top seed UC San Diego in the afternoon.

The Tritons have won three of the past four WWPA Championships. Last season Cal State East Bay advanced to the tournament title match for the first time in program history but fell to UC San Diego, 16-3.

The seeding was determined based on a coach's vote. UC San Diego defeated all three other California members of the WWPA to receive the top spot. Cal State East Bay nearly defeated UCSD for the first time in program history before falling 15-13 in overtime.
