Softball Suffers Pair of Friday Defeats to Toros

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay suffered a pair of defeats at Pioneer Field on Friday afternoon by 2-0 and 6-1 decisions to Cal State Dominguez Hills. Toro pitchers Jaime Duran and Alyssa Valinches combined to hold the Pioneer offense to just eight hits and one run over 14 innings.

Cal State East Bay turned five defensive double plays in a seven inning game two defeat. Kelsey LaVaute extended her consecutive at bats with a base hit streak to eight with to open Friday's action. Gabby Gonzalez extended her streak to 20 games in which she reached base safely.

Unfortunately these noteworthy achievements came as the team suffered its first Friday sweep of a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series.

Cal St. Dom. Hills 2, Cal St. East Bay 0 – F (Game 1)
Duran and Cal State East Bay pitcher Sierra Clark found little trouble through the first three innings of a scoreless tie. Clark retired seven straight batters heading into the fourth when a leadoff double from Carly Mitchell ended the streak.

All six Toro hits came from the top four hitters in the starting lineup. CSUDH opened the fourth with three straight hits including singles from Stephanie Hua and Analisa Nicholson. Clark settled down after surrendering the lead retiring the next three batters and limiting the damage to just a single run.

LaVaute provided the first Pioneer hit of the game with a third inning single. She connected for a base hit in eight straight at bats, spanning the past four games, with a two-out single in the fifth. Pinch runner Mia Ramirez was thrown out at home trying to score the game-tying run.

A two-out error in the top of the sixth allowed Cal State Dominguez Hills to score an insurance run. Cal State East Bay went quietly in the sixth, but a catcher's interference and an error on a ground ball put the game-tying run on base with no outs in the seventh.

LaVaute's streak ended at eight as Duran forced a game ending fielder's choice following a pair of pop outs. She improved to 10-8 on the season after allowing just three hits and struck out four.

Clark struck out three and gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits. She used just 84 pitches to toss her 15th complete game of the season.

Cal St. Dom. Hills 6, Cal St. East Bay 1 – F (Game 2)
CSUDH leadoff hitter Madison Murphy changed the game with two swings and finished game two 3-for-4 with four RBI. Murphy deposited the 3-0 offering from East Bay starting pitcher Tatiana Beilstein over the wall in center field, and blasted a 3-run homer off relief pitcher Jordan Abel in the second to make it a 5-0 score.

The 1-2-3 Toro hitters in Murphy, Mitchell, and Stephanie Hua inflicted most of the damage combining to go 7-for-10 with five RBI and score three runs. Jazmyne Cortinas launched a solo homerun in the third inning to make it 6-0.

Cal State East Bay was down to its final strike before avoiding back-to-back shutouts. Jaynie MacDonald lined a run scoring double into the left-center gap to get the Pioneers on the scoreboard.

CSUDH's Valinches gave up one run on five hits and three walks while striking out six in the win. Cal State East Bay pitcher Kelsey Cairns tossed three shutout innings of relief.

Cal State East Bay (21-20, 9-17 CCAA) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (21-19, 14-12 CCAA) will play a Saturday, April 11, doubleheader at Pioneer Field starting at 11 a.m.
