Pioneers Drop Pair to #10 Aggies, #19 Broncos

Box Score: UCD 13, CSUEB 4 - F
Box Score: SCU 11, CSUEB 5 - F

DAVIS, Calif. – Lengthy scoring runs proved costly as Cal State East Bay women's water polo dropped games to a pair of nationally ranked foes on Saturday at the Schaal Aquatics Center. The Pioneers fell 13-4 to host No. 10 UC Davis, and 11-5 to No. 19 Santa Clara as part of the Aggie Shootout event.

UC Davis 13, Cal State East Bay 4 – F
After an early timeout called by East Bay Head Coach Lisa Cooper the Pioneers tied the game 1-1 courtesy of a Casey Rushforth goal. The host Aggies then closed out the final 12 minutes of the first half scoring seven unanswered including three 6-on-5 scores.

Simonne Call provided an offensive lift with two goals shortly after halftime including a power play score. Nayiri Kechichian added a fourth quarter score again following a Pioneer timeout.

UC Davis goalkeeper Jillian Wilding made seven first half saves in the win. Teammates Haley Cameron and Olivia Husted stopped two shots in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

East Bay goalkeeper Marrina Nation made four first half saves. Miranda Diehm stopped six second half shots in the loss.

Ariel Arcidiacono led a group of nine different Aggies whom scored with three of her own. Sammi Murphy and Allyson Hansen added two apiece.

Santa Clara 11, Cal State East Bay 5 – F
Cal State East Bay trailed 4-3 in the final minute of the first half to No. 19 Santa Clara. The team's hopes of avenging its earlier loss sunk in the third quarter as the Broncos scored five straight goals out of halftime.

SCU's Julia Peters scored three of her game-high five goals in the game changing third quarter. Erin Sheridan and Elle Surber added two each in the Bronco victory.

It was Sabrina Hatzer who tied the game 1-1 early on but in the Saturday finale the Pioneers would not go quietly. After giving up three straight goals and missing on a 5-meter penalty shot, goals on back-to-back possessions from Rushforth and Taylor Cross brought East Bay back to within one.

Nation made six saves, and Diehm one late in the contest.

Cal State East Bay (6-11) will host Harvard on Wednesday, March 18.
