HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay dropped both games of Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader to No. 3 Cal State Monterey Bay by scores of 6-3 and 13-3. The Otters scored first in all four games over the weekend while the Pioneers managed to battle back to pick up a win to close out Friday.
Game one starting pitcher
Sierra Clark struck out six in the circle and led East Bay with her 3-for-4 effort at the plate. The Otters touched her up for 15 hits and scored three times in the first inning and again in the sixth.
Three straight run-scoring hits from Cori Reinhardt, Bianca Noriega, and Madison Casto gave the Cal State Monterey Bay (16-3, 9-3 CCAA) the early lead. Casto added a 2-run homer in the fifth and pinch hitter Jenae Coleman singled on an 0-and-2 offering from Clark to cap the scoring.
East Bay
Gabby Gonzalez provided an offensive spark with an RBI triple in the sixth and a RBI single in the seventh. It was the first multi-RBI game for Gonzalez since her Pioneer debut against Dominican.
Six different Otters finished with multiple base hits led by three from Noriega. Reinhardt improved her record in the circle to 10-0 despite not recording a strikeout and surrendering 11 base hits.
On two separate occasions Cal State East Bay responded with a game-tying offensive frame after Cal State Monterey Bay went ahead.
Marisa Lerma's RBI-single and
Cassie Vela's sacrifice fly tied the game 2-2 in the second.
Alex Vela later scored following her leadoff double and a single from Gonzalez to knot the game 3-3 in the third.
The Otters then erupted for 10 runs over the final three innings with seven in the seventh to seal the win. Casto finished game two 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Anneliese Lopez 2-for-4 and drove in a pair.
Starting pitcher
Emily Perlich suffered the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) in two innings. CSUMB's Lindsey Clarks earned the win allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and seven walks.
Cal State East Bay (14-10, 7-9 CCAA) will be on the road for a CCAA weekend four game set at Sonoma State (17-4, 9-2 CCAA) starting on Friday, March 13.
