Box Score: CSUMB 8, CSUEB 5 - FSEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's water polo was unable to avenge an earlier loss to fellow Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) member Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers scored just once in eight 6-on-5 chances during their 8-5 defeat at the Otter Tank.
Cal State East Bay outshot Cal State Monterey Bay 33-20 overall and drew eight exclusions to just two by the Otters. CSUMB goalkeeper Amanda Jennings played a big role in Saturday's result turning away 16 shots.
CSUMB's Cami Kellogg scored on the opening possession giving her team the lead only 22 seconds into the game. The Otters went on to build a 4-1 lead midway through the second quarter and led by three at halftime.
Monterey Bay won the opening sprint out of halftime and again scored 22 seconds into the period. The score by Bree Hogervorst pushed the Otter advantage to four matching the largest lead of the match.
East Bay responded with goals from
Ka'iliponi McGee and
Sabrina Hatzer and brought hope back to the Pioneers who trailed by only two late in the third quarter. However it was as close as they would get after the Otters netted a 5-meter penalty shot late in the third quarter and Adrianna Craft sealed the game with a late score.
McGee led Cal State East Bay with two goals. Hatzer, Hess, and
Tori Dettloff each scored for the Pioneers. Goalkeeper
Marrina Nation was credited with seven saves in the loss.
Cal State East Bay (11-13) will host UC San Diego (13-16) on Sunday, April 5, at 11 a.m.
