Box Score: MICH 10, CSUEB 5 - FLA JOLLA, Calif. – Cal State East Bay battled a pair of big name Division I programs in No. 3 ranked USC and No. 14 Michigan on Saturday to begin its Triton Invitational schedule.
Taylor Cross scored twice in both matches as the Pioneers fell 22-4 to the Trojans and 10-5 to the Wolverines.

Triton InvitationalUSC 22, Cal St. East Bay 4 – FThe Cal State East Bay defense held Southern California (3-0) to its lowest scoring output of the season in Saturday's opening match at the Canyonview Aquatic Center. The Trojans had previous put up 33 goals against Bakersfield and 24 more versus Cal Baptist.
Cross scored both second quarter goals for the Pioneers with the first halting a 6-0 USC scoring run to open the game. She later converted a 6-on-5 opportunity into a goal with East Bay heading into halftime trailing 9-2.
Ka'iliponi McGee and
Casey Rushforth scored the final goals of the third and fourth quarter respectively. EB goalkeeper
Marrina Nation made five saves in 20 minutes of pool time.
Miranda Diehm made two stops the rest of the way.
USC's Monica Vavic led all players with seven goals. Teammate Melissa Bergesen added six of her own including four third quarter goals for the Trojans.
Michigan 10, Cal St. East Bay 5 – FThe Pioneers hung tough with the Wolverine through three quarters trailing by a slim 7-5 margin. Michigan held East Bay scoreless over the opening 10 minutes, and closing 10 minutes of the game and pulled away later for the victory.
Jenn Lightbody ended the opening drought with her second goal of the year and pulled the Pioneers to within one. The team's traded goals throughout the second quarter with Michigan edging back ahead by two as UM's Elizabeth Williams scored three seconds prior to the halftime horn.
Michigan extended its lead to 7-3 in the third quarter when
Taylor Cross put away a player advantage scoring chance.
Alyssa Hess scored with 2:26 left in the frame and forced a Michigan timeout. It was the final goal of for the Pioneers as Williams and Anderson, who scored all four second half Michigan goals, put the game away.
Cal State East Bay (1-5) will play the loser between No. 9 Loyola Marymount and No. 16 UC Davis on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 8 a.m.
