HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay softball made quick work of Holy Names taking both games of Wednesday's doubleheader by 8-0 and 10-1 scores. Starting pitchers
Tatiana Beilstein and
Kelsey Cairns combined to hold the Hawks to just one run over 10 innings while the offense went to work.
"Our pitchers did great in the circle today. It was great to see our hitters take great at bats, work some walks, and come up with clutch hits," praised East Bay Head Coach
Barbara Pierce.
While Beilstein dominated and Cairns continued to dash the offensive hopes of the Hawks, the offense collected a season-high 22 hits over the doubleheader. Leadoff batter
Lauren Vestal was the tone setter reaching base safely in all seven plate appearances including four base hits with two RBI.
Cal St. East Bay 8, Holy Names 0 – F/6 (Game 1)CSUEB's starting pitcher Beilstein was on the receiving end of a pair of double plays over the first two innings. An alert
Nikki Foster caught the Hawks runner off first base following a force out at second base. She combined with
Haley Whitney to complete the inning ending double play in the first. She then turned the more traditional 6-4-3 inning ending double play in the second preserving a scoreless tie.
The Pioneers took the lead in the bottom half of the frame after Whitney's RBI single off the wall and Foster's run-scoring sacrifice bunt plated two runs. Cal State East Bay took control of the game in the fifth as
Kelsey LaVaute and
Jaynie MacDonald hit back-to-back homers to take a 4-0 lead.
CSUEB forced the end of the game in the sixth with three of the first four batters collecting a base hit. Back-to-back RBI doubles from
Allison Noble and
Mia Ramirez provided a swift end to Wednesday's opener.
Beilstein's no-hit bid was broken up in the top of the fifth by Holy Names (1-9) catcher Marisa Romero. Despite a sliding backhand grab up the middle from East Bay second baseman
Eliana Mello, Romero beat out the throw to first. The only two hits surrendered came in back-to-back at bats as HNU's Samantha Moffat's singled.
Vestal reached base in all four plate appearances going 2-for-2 with two walks. She was one of nine different Pioneers to collect at least one base hit including
Rose Marston, LaVaute, Noble, MacDonald, Ramirez, Whitney, Foster, and
Gabby Gonzalez.
Cal St. East Bay 10, Holy Names 1 – F/5 (Game 2)Cal State East Bay scored 10 unanswered runs after Holy Names took the lead in the second inning. HNU's Moffat scored following her leadoff double after a bloop single and sacrifice fly from Marissa Perez.
East Bay starting pitcher
Kelsey Cairns was able to get the crucial third out when needed. She combined with
Jordan Abel to hold the Hawks to just 1-for-9 in RBI opportunity at bats. In total the Hawks stranded 10 runners on base leading to the early ending in game two.
Brittany Enny made it 3-1 with her third inning double. The Pioneers proceeded with four straight two-out run scoring plate appearances as RBI singles from Vestal and
Marisa Lerma and a bases loaded walk from Noble made it 6-1. The 6-run frame was capped off by a
Sierra Clark double pushing the home side's cushion to seven.
Whitney put the run-rule in effect with another two-out base hit giving the Pioneers a 10-1 lead. Abel came in to close out the final inning and complete the Wednesday sweep.
"It's sure good to be home after eight tough conference games on the road. Now it's back to work to get ready for Humboldt State this weekend," Pierce added.
Cal State East Bay (11-5, 4-4 CCAA) improves to 7-1 at Pioneer Softball Field. That record will be put to the test this weekend when hosting No. 19 ranked Humboldt State (7-4, 4-0 CCAA). The teams will play back-to-back doubleheaders starting on Friday, Feb. 27.
