Hayward, Calif.-- On a warm and sunny day in Hayward, Cal Poly Pomona broke a 1-1 tie on a penalty kick goal by
Christian Gonzalez Diaz with a little over ten minutes to play to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead and an eventual tough loss for Cal State East Bay Friday at Pioneer Stadium.
"Pomona is a good team and there's a reason they lost only one game. I think we competed well and had good chances in the second half to take the lead. The guys worked hard and they are resilient," said Pioneer Head Coach
Andy Cumbo after the Pioneers fell to 1-6 in CCAA play and 2-9 overall.
The Broncos got the scoring started at 29:14 of the first half when Alexander Turkson (3) put one in the net to make it 1-0. Turkson was assisted on the play by Gonzalez-Diaz and Sergi Monso. Monso shot one at Pioneer keeper
Adrian Topete that was saved, but Turkson collected the rebound off Topete for the goal.
It appeared the Pioneers were going to take a 1-0 deficit to the half, but
Michael Paiva connected on a penalty kick, his third of the season, to send the Pioneers into locker room with the momentum.
The second half saw some opportunities for both squad, but the penalty kick benefited Cal Poly Pomona this time in their 2-1 road victory. The Broncos improved their CCAA record to 2-1-2 and 5-1-3 overall.
Cumbo singled out several players for the efforts and singled out five freshmen for their performances. "
Brett Fuchs,
Yousef Diyab,
Marco Neves,
Jesus Ocegueda and
Kevin Perez all had a good impact for us tonight.
Duke Driggs had a good presence and I think this is one of Topete's best performances this year.
The Pioneers were outshot 12-9 and were led in shots by Paiva and
Michael Tieku. Each of the Pioneer players' had three shots.
The Pioneers take their home field again on Sunday as Cal State San Bernardino comes for a visit. Start time for this CCAA contest is 11:30 A.M. "We look forward to getting back on the field and playing Cal State San Bernardino this Sunday."
