HAYWARD, Calif. -- A match that entered halftime scoreless saw Rayane Bouarroudj score the game-winner for No. 5 Cal State Dominguez Hills at 53:15 to send the fans at Pioneer Stadium home unhappy as Cal State East Bay lost 1-0 Thursday night.
The Pioneers' CCAA record drops to 3-8 and 5-11 overall. The Toros, ranked fifth in the nation, improve their CCAA mark to 9-0-2 and 14-1-2 overall.
Despite the loss, Head Coach
Andy Cumbo took away a lot of positives from his team's performance Thursday night. "I liked the way we played tonight, the guys showed that they're competitors and that they have pride in representing our program well. I thought are performance tonight was really good, but could have been better if we scored."
Cumbo knows that Cal State Dominguez Hills is among the nation's elite and was happy with the moxie his squad showed. "Cal State Dominguez Hills is fifth in the nation and clearly a strong team. For us to compete so well against them says a lot about how focused we are on finishing the season strong as we can."
East Bay had 18 shots for the match and
Jeremy Romero had seven of them.
Victor Calderon had three shots, followed by
Chris Gaitan and
Kellen Crow collecting two each.
Adrian Topete had four saves in goal for the Pioneers.
Cumbo singled out
Yousef Diyab, Romero,
Michael Tieku, and
Marco Neves for their great performances. "Yousef played his heart out and Jeremy and Tieku had a strong impact up top.
Marco Neves gave us a lot on both sides of the ball."
Cal State East Bay closes out the regular season Saturday on Senior Day at Pioneer Stadium for a 2 p.m.match against Cal State L.A. "We'll regroup and be ready to finish strong against Cal State L.A. on Saturday," said Cumbo.
