Cal State East Bay Nets Nine in Win Over Pacifc Union

Hayward, Calif. -- Nine different players scored goals for  Cal State East Bay on their way to a 9-0 victory Friday at Pioneer Stadium over visiting Pacific Union College. With the win, the Pioneers improve their overall record to 4-9. Pacific Union falls to 1-8-2 overall.

"Today was a good opportunity to get out of the grind of the CCAA and play someone new in our bye week. Pacific Union worked really hard for 90 minutes and some of our players showed well," said Head Coach Andy Cumbo.

It didn't take long for Cal State East Bay to get on the board as Steffen Sauer netted his first goal of the year at 1:12 of the first half. The Pioneers continued to pressure the Pacific Union goal and found the net for the second time when Duke Driggs (2) scored on a penalty kick. Cal State East Bay would add goals by Chris Gaitan (1), Yousef Diyab (1), and Preston Hale (1) and carry a 5-0 lead into the locker room.

The second half would see Cal State East Bay add four more goals by Paiva (4), Jesus Ocegueda (2), Marco Neves (1), and Adrian Topete (1) to finish off their season-high nine goal output.

Cal State East Bay had eight assists on the afternoon. Paiva led the way with two, followed by Juan Alfaro, Sauer, Kalle Sjogrell, Ali Arianmanesh, Christian Gonzalez, and Diyab all recording one.

Cumbo singled out the play of Arianmanesh, Hale and Jared Johnson. "Ali (Arianmanesh) was really effective with his services into the box. Preston (Hale) had a good impact in our attacking half and scored a really nice goal. Jared (Johnson) did a good job in the back at breaking up plays."

Cal State East Bay outshot Pacific Union 24-0, including 17 of those shots being on goal. Driggs led the way in that category with six.

Cal State East Bay next plays Tuesday at Pioneer Stadium when California Maritime Academy visits for a 7:00 P.M. contest.
