Box Score: UH 17, CSUEB 0 - FHAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay dropped a 17-0 decision to nationally ranked No. 8 Hawaii on Friday night at Pioneer Pool. The Pioneers were unable to score despite drawing 11 exclusions overall including seven in the second half.
Five different Hawaii (2-0) players scored in the first quarter and the total grew to eight as the visiting side took a 10-0 lead into halftime. Danika Kotylak finished with a game-high four goals including two fourth quarter scores.
Cal State East Bay (1-3) goalkeeper
Miranda Diehm made a career-high six saves after jumping in front of the Pioneer goal after halftime. Her highlight stop came on a Rainbow Wahine 6-on-4 after two Pioneers were excluded near the midway point of the fourth quarter.
A 6-on-4 opportunity is rare, but a pair coming on back-to-back possessions took place late in Friday's contest. Head Coach
Lisa Cooper called timeout to set up a player advantage opportunity after drawing an exclusion. Three seconds out of the timeout a second Hawaii player was sent to the exclusion area giving the Pioneers their best scoring chance of the game.
UH goalkeeper Sarah Logan was up to the task and stopped seven shots in the shutout victory. CSUEB starter
Marrina Nation made two first half saves.
Taylor Cross led East Bay with three drawn exclusions.
Ka'iliponi McGee added two in the defeat.
Cal State East Bay will face its third top-10 nationally ranked NCAA Division I team this season when it opens the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego on Feb. 7. The Pioneers will battle No. 3 ranked USC followed by either No. 15 Michigan or No. 16 Long Beach State that afternoon.
