Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's soccer played to a double overtime scoreless draw with Dominican in its 2014 Pioneer Stadium debut on Monday evening. The Pioneers dominated possession but came up empty despite a relentless offensive attack.
"We did a lot of things right tonight, but unfortunately we didn't score. We were much more dynamic than last game, especially in the final third," said East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo following Monday's result.
Cal State East Bay's (0-1-1) constant pressure led to 13 shots in the opening half and 24 by night's end. Dominican (0-2-1) was not credited with a shot attempt until the 65th minute of play and rallied late to finish with eight for the contest.
EB's
Michael Tieku was a first half sub who flashed on offense and placed two of his five shots on target.
Javier Martin placed 2-of-3 shots on target, and
Chris Lara tied for the match-high with six shot attempts.
Kolby Mitnick took six of the Penguins eight shots and had a close range opportunity to sneak out of Hayward with a victory in the final minute of regulation. Mitnick gathered the rebound from just outside the near post and couple yards out. His follow-up attempt narrowly missed right of target as the teams headed into overtime.
Pioneer goalkeeper
Adrian Topete was not forced to make a save in his first solo shutout effort. Counterpart Erik Anderson made six stops for Dominican.
"
Conley Perry had a solid game in the midfield and the players behind him did a great job earning the shutout," praised Cumbo of his team's defense. "We made progress from the last game and we will continue to do so."
Cal State East Bay will travel out of state to face Western Washington (1-1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 13. The Vikings are coming off a 1-0 win over UC San Diego on Sept. 6.
