Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team made its season debut on the road Saturday against Academy of Art. The Pioneers succumbed to a second half attack falling 4-0 to the Urban Knights inside Ram Stadium on the campus of City College of San Francisco.
Academy of Art (1-1-0) ended a scoreless tie in the 62nd minute as Jake Walter tapped home a 1-on-1 opportunity for the eventual game-winning score. Teammate Malcolm McLellan provided the pass as it was the start of a big day for the sophomore midfielder.
McLellan played a role in three of his team's four scores. He has scored in both of the Urban Knights' games this season after doubling their lead in the 78th minute on Saturday and scoring the lone goal in the season opener. McLellan assisted on the final goal to Frederik Nagel, the team's third goal over a 7-minute stretch, in the 85th minute.
"That is not how we want to start our season," stated East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo. "It was close for a good portion of the game, but they were able to capitalize on a few of our mistakes."
Both teams took six shots in the first half with the Knights forcing three saves from Cal State East Bay goalkeeper
Adrian Topete. The junior finished with four saves in his team debut before giving way to
Steven Morgan for the final eight minutes of regulation.
The sixth and final shot of the first half by
Kellen Crow was the lone on target attempt for Cal State East Bay (0-1-0) in full time. It forced the lone save from AAU goalkeeper Alejandro Escobedo on his way to earning a solo shutout victory.
The second half was a different story as Academy of Art held a 13-2 advantage in shots taken and placed 8-of-13 on goal. AAU's Carlos Hernandez led all players with eight shots taken, three on target, and was one of four different Urban Knights to score.
CSUEB seniors
Rica Guerra and
Arnol Arceta earned the start in their return to Ram Stadium where they were former standouts for the CCSF Rams. Guerra led the Pioneers with two shots taken in the loss. CSUEB currently boasts four team members who were former CCSF players with the addition of
Francisco Ayala this season and redshirt senior
Chris Franco.
Cal State East Bay will make its home debut on Monday, Sept. 8, against Dominican (0-2-0).
