Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's soccer scored three second half goals in earning a shutout win over Chaminade on Saturday at Pioneer Stadium.
Janelle Herrera assisted on all three scores on free kicks, finding the head of
Ariana Gordon on the first pair and
Kianna Lamont off a corner for the third.
"I love this team's desire to win and play well. They showed a lot of desire and continue to take our program to a higher level," praised East Bay Head Coach
Amy Gerace. "Janelle continues to step up and has been such a great addition to the program. She's been great on both sides of the ball and has made an immediate impact as a freshman."
Initially Cal State East Bay thought it took the lead off a long range shot from
Rachel Armstrong early in the second half. It deflected down off the center of the crossbar and appeared to clear the goal line. The goal was not awarded and the game remained scoreless nearing the hour mark.
Following a Chaminade (0-3-0) foul Herrera stepped up and served in a pass to Gordon. The leaping senior headed home her second game-winner of the season in the 60th minute. The two would connect again on an identical play from near the same spot in the 76th minute.
"It was nice to see Ari score two goals today. She has high expectations of herself and I know that finding the back of the net today was something she hoped to accomplish," said Gerace.
Kianna Lamont entered the game after the Pioneers earned their fourth of five corner kicks in the game. Lamont would score on her first touch after subbing into the match as she redirected Herrera's service.
Cal State East Bay continues to do a majority of its scoring in the second half this season. Following Saturday's win, the Pioneers have scored 11 of its 13 goals after halftime.
Chaminade's Megan McClanahan put her team's opening shot on target to force the lone save from East Bay goalkeeper
Selena Braun. Silverswords netminder Lauren Ishii made six stops in the loss.
Cal State East Bay (3-1-2) will host Hawaii Hilo (2-1-1) on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
