Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's soccer remains unbeaten at home this season following Saturday night's 2-1 win over Chaminade. Freshman
Michael Paiva put away the game-winner early in the second half to net his first collegiate goal and game-winner.
"Michael had another good game and he did a great job scoring the game-winning goal," praised East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo. "I think our back line deserves credit for handling the pace of their players up top."
It was a promising start for the home side as
Rica Guerra crossed set up
Chris Lara near the penalty kick spot for the go-ahead goal in the 13th minute. The Pioneers maintained its lead for the next 15 minutes until Chaminade (1-3-0) used a cross of its own to draw even.
Colton Gallt found teammate Austin Bush on an overlapping run down the left sideline. Bush served an inward singing cross into the penalty area. Teammate Lukas Pousset leaped high near the far post with his redirect header finding its target in the 29th minute.
A
Javier Martin header in the 35th minute struck the crossbar as the final serious chance for either team to pull ahead before halftime. Martin would have an impact in Saturday's result quickly out of intermission.
Martin's initial shot attempt in the 48th minute was blocked by a Silverswords defender. Paiva settled the ball a few steps inside the 18-yard box and fired low towards the left post.
"After Javi's shot it was deflected right to me. I just tried to shoot it on goal and placed it into the corner," said Paiva. "It was a great feeling being able to score, help out the team, and get that victory today."
Cal State East Bay outshot Chaminade 19-8, but the Silverwords put 4-of-8 shot on target.
Adrian Topete improved his record to 2-2-1 making three saves in the win. Bernd Buescherhoff made two stops for Chaminade in the defeat.
Cal State East Bay (3-2-1) will open conference play on Friday, Sept. 16, against Humboldt State (4-1-1).
