HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team will get little rest following its return from a Washington road trip which concluded on Monday night. The Pioneers will play two non-conference matches before opening league play later this month.

"Our trip went very well, on and off the field. We continue to fine tune our game as we get closer to league play," said East Bay Head Coach Andy Cumbo. "We started two freshmen against WWU and three against SPU. The experiences those young players had should help prepare them to compete in the month of October and hopefully November."

Cal Maritime (0-0-0) will host Cal State East Bay in its season opener on Thursday, Sept. 18. The Keelhaulers are coming off a 3-10-2 season a year ago, but ended on a high note. CMA earned back-to-back victories while outscoring the opposition 8-2 in the process to close out 2013.

The only recent meeting between these two squads resulted in a 5-1 victory for the Pioneers back on Oct. 13, 2012. Javier Martin scored twice in the win with assists coming from current teammates Arthur Ethel and Trevor Ross. EB's five goals in the win is the highest single-game scoring output by a Pioneer squad during the current tenure of sixth year head coach Andy Cumbo.

"Maritime is a competitive team that continually improves. They take their soccer serious and will have extra motivation for their season and home opener," said Cumbo.

Chaminade (1-2-0) will make its first trip to the mainland this year with the first stop in Hayward. The Silverswords will play four matches in one week including three PacWest conference opponents. CUH will face Holy Names (Sept. 23), Dominican (Sept. 25) and Fresno Pacific (Sept. 27).

Chaminade has already exceeded its win total from the year prior after posting a 0-15-1 record in 2013. The Silverswords earned a 1-0 road win over BYU-Hawaii (Sept. 13) after falling to the Seasiders 3-0 in 2013.

"Chaminade will want to get off to a positive start on its California road trip. They seem very competitive and they had a really big win last week," stated Cubmo.

Both the Pioneers and 'Swords have scored two goals this season with both coming from the same player. CUH's Austin Bush has scored in each of his team's past two games. EB's Luigi Castillo scored twice in the team's 2-1 victory over Western Washington.

In the team's only meeting under Coach Cumbo, the 'Swords took down the Pioneers 3-0 back on Sept. 6, 2010, in Honolulu. The hosts earned a shutout win despite being outshot 21-8 in the contest.

"For both games this week we are focusing on ourselves. Our goal is to be more productive in the attacking half," said Cumbo.
