Box Score: CSEB 10, SSU 7 - FROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Cal State East Bay never trailed during its 10-7 road win over Sonoma State on Friday afternoon at Rudloff Pool. Senior
Sara Hudyn scored five times and vaulted into second on the program's all-time scoring list with 245 career goals after leading the Pioneer offense against the Seawolves.
"We played well today.
Marrina Nation had a very solid game in the cage and we had good defensive communication," praised East Bay Head Coach
Lisa Cooper of her team's effort. Nation finished with 12 saves on the day and has been one of the main factors to the Seawolves offense scoring only 10 goals over the past two head-to-head meetings.
Julia Charlesworth won the opening sprint and teammate
Simonne Call scored on the team's first possession.
Casey Rushforth made it two goals in two trips down the pool as she converted a 6-on-5 chance to give the Pioneers a 2-0 cushion.
Hudyn scored back-to-back goals later in the frame to give Cal State East Bay a 4-1 lead after one quarter of play. Both teams went 2-for-5 in player advantage chances but two Pioneer penalty shot conversions played a major role in Friday's margin of victory.
Hudyn's second penalty shot goal came with 1:26 left before halftime. Sonoma State (7-19) had cut the deficit to 5-4 and was looking to pull even with Cal State East Bay (14-13) by halftime. The teams traded goals out of intermission before the Pioneers scored three unanswered goals to take their largest lead of the game at 9-5 into the final quarter.
Taylor Cross capped off the scoring run finishing a 6-on-5 chance with 2:45 remaining in the third period. Amanda Chinn added a final minute score to match the team's largest advantage of the game.
Friday's victory was the third occasion CSUEB defeated SSU this season. The Pioneers defeated the Seawolves by one in the opener on Feb. 9, by two goals in the second meeting on March 9, and by three scores in the regular season finale.
Cal State East Bay will close out its regular season schedule on Friday, April 18, at Cal State Monterey Bay (9-14).
