Second Half Scoring Sprees Pace Pioneers to Sunday Wins

REDLANDS, Calif. – Cal State East Bay capped off its weekend schedule with victories over La Verne and Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) opponent San Bernardino on Sunday at the Thompson Aquatics Center. The Pioneer offense tallied 30 goals on the day highlighted by a team-high nine from senior Sara Hudyn.

Cal State East Bay 14, Cal State San Bernardino 6 – F
The Coyotes pulled even with the Pioneers midway through the second quarter after converting back-to-back 6-on-5 chances. Cal State East Bay responded with three unanswered goals to spark an 8-1 scoring run to put Cal State San Bernardino away for good for the second time this season.

East Bay goalkeeper Marrina Nation stopped 14 shots including nine second half saves to aid the lengthy scoring run. Hudyn and Ka'iliponi McGee led all players with four goals apiece. Katie Braun paced the Coyotes with three goals in the loss.

The Pioneers took advantage of limited premium scoring opportunities after failing to draw an exclusion or penalty during the first half of play. Cal State East Bay converted 2-of-3 player advantage chances and both penalty shots in Sunday morning's victory.

Cal State East Bay 16, La Verne 9 – F
The Leopards battled the Pioneers tough through the first three quarters tying the game 4-4 in the second frame and trailed by a slim 8-7 margin late in the third quarter. Hudyn and Allison Zell scored on back-to-back possessions extending CSUEB's lead to 10-7 by the end of the period. Both scored again early in the fourth along with teammate Taylor Cross to take a 13-7 advantage and put the game out of reach.

Hudyn scored five goals to lead all players and was one of five Pioneers to score multiple goals. Zell finished with a season-high four scores while teammates Olivia Mackell, Jennifer Lightbody, and Cross contributed two apiece.

Both teams converted their premium scoring opportunities into goals. Cal State East Bay turned four of its seven drawn ejections into goals while La Verne cashed in on 5-of-6 chances.

Sarah Jeffris led La Verne with three goals and Lora Marquez-Salgado netted a pair in the loss. Goalkeeper Jacqueline Rojas made three stops for the Leopards. Nation racked up 11 saves in the win and finished with 25 on the day. It was her fourth straight game with double-digit saves, all coming in East Bay wins.

Cal State East Bay (13-10) will host Michigan on April 5 in the team's final home game of the season.
