THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal State East Bay finished off its weekend schedule with a resounding 14-5 victory over NCAA Division III squad Occidental on Sunday afternoon at the Cal Lutheran Invitational. The Pioneers fell 11-3 to nationally ranked No. 12 Division I program Long Beach State earlier in the day at the Samuelson Aquatic Center.

After surrendering their first quarter lead to Occidental (1-7), the Pioneers stormed back outscoring the Tigers 12-2 over the final three quarters. Ka'iliponi McGee,
Allison Zell, and
Sara Hudyn scored four goals each to lead the offense.
McGee and Zell had efficient shooting performances with each scoring four goals on only five attempts. Zell led the Pioneers with four assists, as did Hudyn with three steals.
East Bay goalkeeper
Marrina Nation made 13 saves in the victory. She held the Occidental offense to only one score over the final 20 minutes to pick up her fifth win in net this season.
Kelsey Shyba led Occidental with two first quarter goals. The OXY offense missed out on premium scoring chances throughout and converted only 1-of-11 player advantage opportunities in the game.
The Pioneers tied their Sunday opener with Long Beach State (9-6) after a Hudyn late first quarter goal followed by a second quarter penalty shot conversion by Taylor Cross. Â The Beach would retake the lead and hold a 4-2 advantage into halftime.
It was the first pair of five unanswered goals as LBSU outscored CSUEB 9-1 over the final 19 minutes of regulation. The Pioneers were unable to respond going 0-for-6 on player advantage opportunities, while The Beach netted two of their five goals courtesy of 6-on-5 chances during their 5-0 scoring run to pull away for good.
Nation continued to excel in goal making 14 saves and held The Beach to their lowest scoring output of their four weekend contests. She finished the weekend with 50 saves over four games and made at least 13 stops in 3-of-4 contests.
Three different LBSU players scored multiple goals led by four from Coriann Snyder. Teammates Justine Morgan and Hilary Veselik netted three and two goals, respectively.
Cal State East Bay (5-8, 0-1 WWPA) returns to Western Water Polo Association action when it hosts Sonoma State (2-11, 1-0 WWPA) on Sunday, March 9. The Pioneers will play a doubleheader as they face the Seawolves at 11:30 a.m. and Mercyhurst (5-1) at 5:30 p.m.
