HAYWARD, Calif. – Off the heels of a season-high scoring output in its previous game the Cal State East Bay women's water polo team nearly matched that effort in Saturday's 15-8 home win over Cal State San Bernardino.
Sara Hudyn and
Julia Charlesworth combined for six of the team's first nine goals to build a 9-2 lead shortly after halftime.
Taylor Cross scored the game's opening goal on the first of three consecutive Pioneer possessions which resulted in a goal.
Casey Rushforth added a late first quarter goal that put the home side ahead 4-1 after eight minutes.
Neither team had a player excluded over the opening 10-plus minutes of the game. Cal State East Bay converted on its first of only three player-advantage chances in the game as Charlesworth completed her hat trick in lifting the Pioneers to a 7-2 halftime lead. East Bay finished 2-for-3 on 6-on-5 chances and Cross converted a fourth quarter penalty shot.
Hudyn rounded out her own hat trick with two goals to open the third quarter providing the Pioneers largest lead of the game to that point. Her game-high fourth goal with 3:53 left in regulation gave East Bay an eight goal cushion at 14-6.
Four different Pioneers contributed multiple goals including a pair from Cross and Ka'iliponi McGee. Goalkeeper
Marrina Nation finished with seven saves including three in the fourth quarter.
Crystal Curran and Alison Glaser scored three goals apiece in the loss. Madison Morris made six saves in goal for Cal State San Bernardino (1-12, 0-4 WWPA).
Cal State East Bay (8-9, 2-1 WWPA) will host Macalester (2-1) on Monday, March 17, at 4:30 p.m.
