HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's water polo will host Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) foe Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, March 15, and Macalester on Monday, March 17. The Pioneers have won three straight and will look to move up the conference standings with a weekend win over the Coyotes.
Cal State East Bay (7-9, 1-1 WWPA) enters Saturday's game on a season-long three game win streak. The Pioneers most recently defeated Sonoma State to pick up their first WWPA win of the season, and Mercyhurst 16-6 at Pioneer Pool.
The East Bay defense held all three opponents to six goals or fewer and an average of under five scores per contest. Earlier this season goalkeeper
Marrina Nation was named the WWPA Player of the Week and she has continued to play at a high level. She has made 155 saves this season and is holding opponents to an average of 10.06 goals per game thus far.
Sara Hudyn leads the offense with 42 goals in her senior season. The Pioneers have three options to complete their 1-2 offensive attack with Ka'iliponi McGee (16 goals), Taylor Cross (13 goals) or
Allison Zell (13 goals). Zell also leads the team with 23 assists and 22 steals on the year.
Cal State San Bernardino (1-10, 0-2 WWPA) will have three chances to pick up its first league win of the season this weekend. The Coyotes will be on the road Friday against Sonoma State, Saturday versus East Bay, and Sunday to take on Monterey Bay. CSUSB has previously lost in home conference contests to SSU and CSUMB by 13-4 and 12-11 margins, respectively.
Last year Cal State East Bay swept the season series over Cal State San Bernardino winning all three meetings. The Pioneers have won the past seven matchups overall with the last Coyotes victory dating back to their 2009 regular season finale.
Macalester has a treacherous opening to the opening portion of its season which begins today. The Scots will play seven games over three days at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Conference Tournament including three Friday contests. Macalester will then play two more games on Saturday and Sunday, before heading out to California for Monday's game at Pioneer Pool.
