Pioneers Split Saturday Games to Open Weekend Schedule

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's water polo earned a 9-7 victory over Azusa Pacific to close out day one of the Cal Lutheran Invitational. The Pioneers dropped their opener 19-5 to nationally ranked No. 7 Cal State Northridge with both contests taking place at Oaks Christian High School on Saturday.

In the Pioneers opener they faced their third top-10 nationally ranked team of the season in the Matadors. CSUN scored six unanswered goals to open the game and led 14-1 early in the third quarter.

East Bay senior Sara Hudyn scored the first of her team-high two goals to end the scoring drought early in the second quarter. The goal put her in elite company as she became the third Pioneer in program history to net 200 career goals.

Julia Charlesworth, Olivia Mackell, and Amanda Chinn each scored once in the loss. East Bay goalkeeper Marrina Nation made 14 saves.

Three different Cal State Northridge (11-5) players recorded a hat trick led by Marisa Young with four goals. Natalie Averell and Kiernan Davis split time in goal and combined to make 16 stops in the win.

The Pioneers rebounded in the final game of the day breaking a fourth quarter tie by scoring the final two goals of the match. Taylor Cross and Casey Rushforth scored successive goals to put East Bay ahead by the eventual final score of 9-7.

Charlesworth finished with a game-high three goals including the team's lone player advantage score of the game. Cross and Hudyn finished with two goals apiece.

EB's Nation and Cougars goalkeeper Jessica Armagost both tallied nine saves for their respective teams. Maryann Slama led APU with two goals in the loss.

Cal State East Bay (4-8) will face No. 12 Long Beach State at 9:15 a.m. at the Samuelson Aquatic Center to open Sunday's action. The Pioneers conclude their weekend against Division III squad Occidental at 2:15 p.m.
