LA JOLLA, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's water polo concluded the Triton Invitational on Sunday afternoon taking down Sonoma State 10-9 at Canyonview Pool. East Bay Head Coach Lisa Cooper earned her 200th career victory while at the helm of the Pioneer program.

"This weekend was a great experience for us. We learned a lot by playing some of the top NCAA Division I teams in the nation," said Coach Cooper.

Cal State East Bay (2-4) never trailed in a tightly contested game with Sonoma State (0-5) as neither team led by more than three goals in regulation. The teams headed into the final frame tied 8-8 when East Bay's Sara Hudyn and Julia Charlesworth each scored to put the Pioneers up by two with 2:30 left in regulation.

Simonne Call scored twice with her first coming as time expired in the opening quarter. The Pioneers won the second quarter sprint and Hudyn scored her first of five goals to take a 3-1 lead. It was her first of three second quarter goals as she combined with teammate Ka'iliponi McGee to turn a tie ballgame into the largest advantage of the game at 7-4 just before halftime.

The Seawolves responded out of intermission as Lexii Morabito capped off a 4-1 run that knotted the game at 8-8 with less than 10 minutes left in regulation. Brittny Hummel scored one of her team-high four goals as Sonoma State was within reach of its first victory this season.

East Bay goalkeeper Marrina Nation made a season-high 12 saves in the victory. Hudyn provided half of the team's goals (5-of-10) and earned half of the team's drawn ejections (3-of-6). Allison Zell finished with team-highs of three steals and two assists in the victory.

"It was great to see different people stepping up. Simonne (Call) had two beautiful goals. Sara (Hudyn) was on fire from outside and 2-meters," praised Cooper.

Cal State East Bay fell 14-6 in Sunday's opener to Marist (3-4). The Foxes opened the game scoring six unanswered goals and held the Pioneers scoreless over the opening 12 minutes. Ka'iliponi McGee then responded with a natural hat trick, scoring the game's next three goals all courtesy of 6-on-5 chances.

McGee finished with a game-high four scores, all coming on player advantage opportunities. Taylor Cross and Allison Zell each scored a third quarter goal in the defeat.

Anna-Lena Hathaway led Marist with three goals and was one of four Foxes to score multiple times. Jessica Hamby, Kathryn Knutson, and Brooke Else tallied two goals apiece.

Cal State East Bay will host Cal State Monterey Bay (0-8) on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m. Both teams will open Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) play.
