Pioneers Drop Sunday Games at Aggie Shootout

DAVIS, Calif. – Women's water polo took part in the Aggie Shootout on Sunday hosted by UC Davis. The Pioneers suffered its second one goal defeat in as many games dropping a 7-6 decision to Bakersfield. CSUEB closed out its weekend falling 15-4 to No. 14 ranked UC Davis.

Cal State East Bay nor Bakersfield led by more than two goals in Sunday's low scoring affair. Sara Hudyn scored one of her team-high two goals on the team's opening possession to give Pioneers their only lead of the game.

CSUB's Kristen Jensen scored six of her team's seven goals including all four of the Roadrunners' goals in the second half. Her final goal came with 14 seconds left to break a 6-6 tie during a player advantage opportunity.

On the Pioneers final possession Hudyn's backhand from set barred out to force overtime. Teammates Ka'iliponi McGee and Julia Charlesworth each scored fourth quarter goals to pull even with the Roadrunners. Taylor Cross and Breanna Ritter each scored for Cal State East Bay.

East Bay goalkeeper Marrina Nation made 11 stops for the second straight game. CSUB's Courtney Wahlstrom made 14 saves in the victory.

UC Davis concluded its weekend and the Aggie Shootout against the visiting Pioneers on Sunday afternoon. Following a 6-on-5 goal from Hudyn to pull within 3-2 near the midway point of the first quarter, UCD scored nine unanswered goals to lead 12-2 in the final minute of the third quarter.

Hudyn again led the Pioneers with two scores. Allison Zell and Cross each scored once in the loss.

Davis' Alex Rawlinson scored three goals to lead all players. She was one of three Aggies to score in double figures with Katrina Husted and Carla Tocchini each netted a pair of goals.

Nation and UCD goalkeeper Jillian Wilding each stopped four shots in goal.

Cal State East Bay (2-7) will be on the road Saturday, Feb. 22, against Fresno Pacific (2-7). The Sunbirds played at Pioneer Pool in East Bay's home opener, and the Pioneers will do the same for FPU.
