Water Polo to Broadcast WWPA Opener Versus Monterey Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay will open Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) play at Pioneer Pool on Saturday, Feb. 15, against Cal State Monterey Bay. The Pioneers will then head to UC Davis to take on Bakersfield and the No. 14 nationally ranked Aggies the following day.

East Bay (2-4) enters the weekend coming off a 10-9 win to close out the Triton Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 9. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak and gave Coach Lisa Cooper her 200th victory.

Cal State East Bay's offense has run primarily through senior All-American Sara Hudyn and her 19 goals. She has scored half of the team's goals this season following a program record 109 in 2013. Eleven of her 19 goals have come in the team's two victories in 2014.

Cal State Monterey Bay (0-8) is in search of its first victory after facing stiff competition throughout the opening portion of the season. The Otters have taken on five teams ranked in the top-15 including No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Arizona State, and No. 7 UC Irvine.

Adrianna Croft leads the offense with nine goals despite missing one game and starting only once this season. As a team the Otters have scored just 31 goals, less than four per game this season.

Almost exactly one year ago to the day of this Saturday's game Cal State East Bay defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 14-7.

Cal State East Bay vs. Bakersfield (at UC Davis)
Bakersfield (3-7) will finish its Aggie Shootout schedule as East Bay starts on Sunday. Six of the seven Roadrunner losses this season have been suffered to teams ranked in the nation's top-20.

CSUB has a balanced offensive attack that boasts four players with 10-plus goals on the season. Niki De Leon leads the team with 16 goals and 23 drawn ejections through 10 games. Kristen Jensen leads the team with 18 steals and ranks second with 15 scores.

Last season the Pioneers suffered a narrow 10-8 loss to the Roadrunners. Simonne Call, Casey Rushforth, Hudyn, and Allison Zell each scored in the defeat.

Cal State East Bay at UC Davis
For the second time in eight days the Pioneers will take on UC Davis. East Bay dropped a 12-5 decision to the Aggies to conclude Saturday's action at the Triton Invitational.

In that contest Cal State East Bay trailed by a slim 5-3 margin after one quarter of play. UC Davis' defense stepped up and held the Pioneers to just one more goal until the final seconds of regulation. UC Davis is coming off an impressive Triton Invitational performance in which it earned one goal victories over No. 16 UC Santa Barbara (6-5) and No. 13 Indiana (8-7).

UC Davis (5-5) is led offensively by Keelia Houston and Allyson Hansen whom have scored 13 goals apiece. Hansen leads the team with 22 drawn ejections and Houston with six assists on the season.
